How Long Does It Take to Notice Someone Missing?
“People say absence makes the heart grow fonder. But how long does it actually take for someone to notice an absence?
I think it takes three weeks. That’s how long my cousin took to realize I wasn’t there — and even then, only while looking through her wedding photos.
I wasn’t included in the family pictures.
Not in the cousins’ picture.
Not even in a single random frame.
For a divorcee like me, there is no marital family standing beside me, filling the empty spaces. And I cannot compel my sick parents to join me for photographs. I cannot push myself into a circle unless I am invited into it. Unfortunately, that invitation never came.
I was there — beside them, in front of them, among them.
Yet somehow, I remained invisible.
I waited eagerly for someone to call me into the frame, but my turn never came. And why should I force myself into spaces where I already feel unwanted?
So, with pain quietly tucked inside me, I let it go. Because sometimes invisibility feels more dignified than begging to be seen.
And now, after twenty-one days, they ask about my absence.
What am I supposed to say?
Should I ask them,
‘Were you all blind?’
Should I ask why it took so long to notice?
Or should I simply lie and say,
‘I was busy.’
Or maybe smile and say,
‘It’s fine.’”
